In the last years of my coaching and therapy couples, I realized that not all people get married on their wedding day. Many people (especially men, and especially those who have been damaged by previous marriages) tend to marry (and trust) slowly over time. I am convinced that if Mark and Ellen stayed together, they trust each other more and trust their relationship than they did when they made their marriage arrangement. On money issues as well as on all issues, patience and compassion are the cornerstones of progress in marriages. A: After years of therapy and coaching in areas related to money conflicts, I discovered a constant about marital agreements: those who approach the subject are called bad partners – unromantic, suspicious, cold, controlling. The other member of the couple is considered romantic, emotional, generous, confident. Nevertheless, marital agreements play a role in helping couples plan together and commit to their future, especially if they were previously married. If they are well managed, they can even make the marriage stronger. They don`t trust me, do they? Why else would they want one? They don`t automatically call you a goldsmith. While marital agreements are seen primarily as a way of deciding how your wealth would be divided in the event of a divorce, they can be initiated for many reasons. According to lawyer and certified family law expert Kelly Chang Rickert of Los Angeles, the main reason couples receive prenupes is to protect their assets when they live in a state of collective real estate, a state that says all married couples share everything from each other`s credit card debts to mortgages as soon as they become infected. If a couple enters into a marriage with very different financial images – and wants to do so – that would be a reason to have a prenupe. He added that he would be quite happy to live with Ellen for the rest of his life without a marriage license, and the only reason he married her was that he loved her and that he would make her happy.
He was willing to take this step, but only with a marital agreement that would protect the remaining assets intended for his children. They are right that cohabitation agreements are not a common practice, but that does not mean that they are a bad idea.Back to Blog
